    Carney Consultancy Golf day 2025

    Picture
North Tyneside-based, Carney Consultancy, has raised £5,245 at a charity golf day in support of The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.

The money raised will fund vital local support services including a 24/7 helpline, mental health training and on-site assistance for workers in crisis.
There was a strong turnout from across the regional construction and development sector, including Northern Ceilings & Partitions Limited, Compass Developments (NE) Ltd, Atlas Certification, Trevella Jobs, True North Construction, PJS Brickwork (Teams 1 and 2), Shadbolt, H Malone & Sons, Ian Costello, ADS, John N Dunn Group, MGM Construction (Phil Burridge), STP Construction Ltd, Adderstone Civils, NCBF, Baileygomm and North Wealth Management.

The winning team was John N Dunn Group, with Atlas Certification and Carney Consultancy taking second and third places.
Operating nationally, the first branch of The Lighthouse Charity was established in 1956 in the North East. It delivers support to the construction sector across the UK and is the only charity that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing help to workers and their families. It receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of those within the industry to continue its vital work.
According to data from The Lighthouse Charity, two construction workers take their own lives every working day in the UK. Over 55% of construction workers report experiencing mental health issues, yet many feel unable to speak out due to stigma.

Carney Consultancy is a long-term supporter of The Lighthouse Charity with managing director, Angela Carney, serving on its North East board.
Angela, said: “Mental health continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry. Through The Lighthouse Charity, we’re working hard to change the culture and make sure no one feels they have to struggle alone. There is a growing collective understanding that more needs to be done to address the shocking statistics and raise awareness so that more people feel able to speak out and seek help.”

Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy provides health and safety consultancy and training for construction and engineering firms. With a team drawn from both main contracting and subcontracting backgrounds, the company has become a trusted partner for small to medium-sized builders, specialist subcontractors and management companies.
This isn’t the first time the company has raised funds for The Lighthouse Charity. In 2023, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, members of the Carney team raised £3,830 by taking part in the Great North Run.

Martin Crammond, director at Carney Consultancy, said: “We’re proud to continue supporting The Lighthouse Charity and grateful to all the companies who joined us for this year’s golf day. Their generosity helps ensure construction workers across the North East have access to the support they need when they need it most.”

Carney Consultancy expands operations with move to new North Shields Headquarters

    Picture
Carney Consultancy, a leading Quality, Safety, Health and Environmental (QSHE) training and consultancy firm, has announced its relocation to a new, larger office space at The Barracks Building, The Fish Quay, North Shields. The move signifies a significant step in the company's five-year growth strategy, enabling it to accommodate its growing team and ambitious plans for the future, including the development of its client base across the whole of the north of England.

Following a year of impressive expansion, Carney is nearing a milestone of 200 clients, fuelled by a 64% surge in turnover and a 22% increase in retained clients over the past two years. This success is attributed to the introduction of new services, an expansion of the company’s geographic footprint and a focus on building strong relationships with clients across the UK.
The new headquarters at The Barracks Building, which offers a modern and spacious environment, provides the necessary infrastructure to allow the company to expand its training capabilities, with the addition of a second training room enabling it to deliver a wider range of specialist courses in areas such as sustainability, environmental awareness and fire safety.
Carney’s five-year business plan includes increasing its retained customer base from 200 to 250, growing turnover by 75%, and expanding its operations further into the North West and Yorkshire. The company is also investing heavily in training, offering a wider range of courses and growing its team of principal designers and CDM advisers.

Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy specialises in construction and engineering sectors, providing health and safety consultancy and training. Team members come from a main contracting and subcontracting background and have worked, as consultants, with some of the North East’s main companies. The firm works on an on-going basis with a variety of small to medium sized builders, specialist sub-contractors and management companies.

Angela Carney, managing director, Carney Consultancy, said: “This move represents a significant milestone for the business. “We have experienced tremendous growth in recent years and our new headquarters provides us with the space and resources we need to continue on this trajectory. We are excited about the opportunities this move presents, particularly in terms of expanding our training programmes and attracting new talent to the business. This move and expansion is only possible thanks to our loyal client base and, of course, the skills, commitment and dedication of our wonderful staff.”
Carney, which currently has a team of 12 employees, is actively recruiting for two new positions to assist with its strong forward order book. In addition, the company is looking to further expand its client base in the North West and Yorkshire regions, which will be supported by the recruitment of new staff in these areas.

Carney is committed to supporting the next generation of construction professionals, with plans to sign up to the PlanBEE programme, an initiative that provides opportunities for young people to gain valuable experience within construction.

Angela, who is the current president of Northern Counties Builders Federation, said: “The industry is going from strength-to-strength and we are committed to playing a big part in its growth.
“We are passionate about bringing young people into construction, alongside adding to the number of former military personnel on the team and providing them with the training and support they need to succeed. “In particular, we are keen to recruit people to train as health and safety professionals, filling a critical gap in the industry. Our unique approach to training, which mirrors the rigorous standards applied to engineers and quantity surveyors, will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their careers and support the delivery of best-in-class service to our clients.”

     New addition joins growing team

    Picture
North Tyneside-based, Carney Consultancy, has appointed Zachary Marshall, 26, as administrative assistant.
His arrival is in-line with the company’s commitment to develop and retain talented young people, including the launch of a graduate recruitment scheme.
Carney Consultancy has experienced a positive first half of the year, with increased growth and a strong forward order book. In the last two years, the company, led by managing director, Angela Carney and directors, Martin Crammond and David Wadds, has seen turnover surge by 64 per cent, with a 22 per cent increase in retained clients.
Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy specialises in construction and engineering, providing health and safety consultancy and training. Team members come from a main contracting and subcontracting background and have worked, as consultants, with some of the North East’s main companies.
Zach, said: “I have five years’ experience working in a customer service background and I wanted a new challenge. Carney Consultancy really appealed to me because of its career progression routes. I was impressed by the videos on its website highlighting the team and it seemed to be a friendly environment to work in – all of which I have found to be true!
“As well as the administrative side of the role, where I shadow customer liaison coordinator, Louise Dack, I am also beginning to learn SHEQ management systems, SSIPS and Constructionline applications. Our health and safety assistant, Kerry Benson, is advising me. I am eager to learn as there are many opportunities to develop my career via a range of training routes offered by the company.”
Managing director, Angela Carney, said: “Zach is proving to be a great addition to our team. He joins with enthusiasm and a hunger to learn more. Our consultants have all been trained from scratch and that’s always been our approach. We develop people to reach their potential, often they can’t see how good they are, but we can.
“It is crucial, from the outset, to have a detailed training programme for trainees and apprentices, so they understand what needs to be achieved to continually move their careers forward.”

    Graduate recruitment programme launched

North-Tyneside based, Carney Consultancy signals plans for expansion as it launches a graduate recruitment scheme.
Aimed at attracting the next generation of health and safety consultants, the company will hire a graduate for Carney Consultancy Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy specialises in construction and engineering, providing health and safety consultancy and training. Team members come from a main contracting and subcontracting background and have worked, as consultants, with some of the North's main companies.

The graduate recruitment scheme follows a positive first quarter with increased growth and a strong forward order book. In the last two years, the company, led by managing director, Angela Carney and directors, Martin Crammond and David Wadds, has seen turnover surge by 64 per cent following a 22 per cent increase in retained clients.
As senior vice president of Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF), a board member of both Constructing Excellence North East (CENE) and the regional branch of the National Association of Women in Construction, Angela Carney is known throughout the industry as a passionate advocate of helping to raise the profile and image of the construction sector so that it attracts more young people and women into the sector.

Most recently, Angela and Northern Counties Builders Federation has helped to relaunch the North East Schools Wonder Challenge in which schools within the NELEP areas of Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and Durham to challenge year 9 and 10 students to form mini construction companies.

The NCBF is also working closely with colleges across the region to connect employers with trade students who are looking to take their first steps into the world of work.
Angela said: “Having spent 20 years laying solid foundations to Carney Consultancy, my aim is to allow the next generation of directors to build the business for their next generation. For me, it is about leaving a legacy to ensure continued investment in the training and development of future generations.

“I’m proud that we invest heavily in the development of our team. Our senior health and safety consultant, Sarah James, is an example of this. Before she came to us, Sarah was struggling to get her previous employer to invest in her training. After four years with us she achieved NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma, NVQ Level 6, Chartered membership status with IOSH, as well as doubling her joining salary. Sarah has now been given a fantastic career opportunity which could take her all over the globe. We could never offer her that currently, so she can now take this new role with confidence in her technical and competence as a health and safety professional, due to our investment in her.

“Over the next five years, we have a recruitment plan to increase the number of women in our technical roles. Currently, we have five male and six female consultants. Our consultants have all been trained from scratch and that’s always been our strategy, to ensure we develop people to reach the potential they often can’t see, but we can.
“If we don’t proactively start changing our image as an industry we will struggle to recruit more people. The training and attracting of new people must start with employers training more people from scratch. This means investing time and money.

“There are some fabulous companies out there already doing this and while we all, at times, need to recruit established, experienced people, we need all companies to participate in attracting and training more new people and having a detailed training programme for trainees and apprentices, so they are involved in their own career path.”

North East Built Environment gears up for Construction Summit and Innovation Showcase

    Picture
Constructing Excellence in the North East has announced that this year’s annual North East England Construction Summit – A Route To Value, will be held at the Hilton Hotel Newcastle-Gateshead on 18 October.

It is the largest construction conference in the region and supports the industry’s OneVoice campaign, which aims to build a successful, sustainable and inclusive construction industry.  It will how they each offer a route to value.

The OneVoice action plan was led by the Construction Industry Council North East (CIC), Constructing Excellence in the North East (CENE), Construction Alliance North East (CAN) and Generation for Change (G4C), as a rallying call to the region to become a beacon of best practice.

AtkinsRéalis (formerly known as Faithful+Gould) is headline sponsor with four key themed sponsors which link to the OneVoice campaign. They include RE:GEN Group as climate sponsor, K2 Construction Management as value sponsor, Esh Construction as people sponsor and Sir Robert McAlpine as innovation sponsor.

The innovation showcase is also returning to this year’s summit, providing an opportunity for SMEs and start-ups who are innovating in areas such as decarbonisation and sustainability to showcase their ideas to regional leaders in construction.

Speakers on the day will be linked to the key themes including, Lucy Malarkey, director, Positive About Inclusion, who will lead on the people theme and climate will be a key focus for Jess Cook, Net Zero programme manager,
North of Tyne Combined Authority. Kay Tor, project delivery advisor, Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) will discuss value and Natasha Boulding, co-founder at Low Carbon Materials will explore innovation. Low carbon Materials, developer of raw materials for the built environment, completed a place on the WSP USA Emerging Growth Partnership Programme, following a meeting at the OneVoice, North East England Construction Summit 2021. The company was also a 2022 Earthshot prize finalist. Kathyrn Gardner, regional director at AtkinsRéalis, headline sponsor of the summit and chair of the value group, said: “This is a key calendar event and we continue to showcase our support as headline sponsor.
“This year, the summit impresses the importance of ‘A Route To Value.’ We want to define value and make it accessible, so we move away from projects being deemed a success because they were
delivered to minimum standards at the lowest capital cost on completion. Value will flow throughout the day through each of the four key themes as we explore its importance.”

Carol Cairns, chair of Constructing Excellence in the North East, said: “As ever our annual Construction Summit is shaping up to be a must attend event, bringing the whole industry together
showcasing leading edge practice.  Our focus on value is particularly pertinent given the significant impact the construction industry has on our society, delivering environmental improvements,
    economic growth and social value.”

Dedicated People Group leads sector support for those made redundant following the fall of Tolent and Metnor

    Picture

The People Group at Constructing Excellence in the North East (CENE) is at the forefront of direct support to those affected by the fall of Metnor and Tolent.
Led by Nik Turner, director of communities and customer services at believe housing, the People Group has created a jobs board highlighting opportunities to former workers at both companies and the wider supply chain.
Contractors with vacancies have also listed opportunities on LinkedIn, including Esh Group, RE: GEN, Seymour Civil Engineering Contractors, MGL Group, Turner & Townsend and Mott MacDonald. Regional recruitment companies, including CDM Recruitment, are also placing displaced workers free of charge and the jobs board created by the People Group is on the CENE website.
The People Group works across all sectors of the construction industry, supporting employers of all sizes and their workforce.
Working with education providers, the Group assists curriculum development through industry liaison, ensuring learners obtain industry relevant skills to complement their academic and vocational studies.
It also works with the North East Local Enterprise Partnerships to attract, develop, retain, reward and celebrate people equipped with the necessary personal, technical and leadership skills.
Group members include Esh Group, Carney Consultancy, Bowmer+Kirkland, Ryder Architecture, believe housing, RE: GEN Group, Hartlepool College and Construction Alliance North East (CAN).
2023, will see a focus on the four key sector themes within CENE - people, value, innovation and climate - which are designed to showcase good practice across the region and beyond. By harnessing the wealth of knowledge and experience of its industry members and partners, the groups identify opportunities for the region’s development, building on existing good practice to deliver a more productive sector, delivering long term value and sustainability for society.
The themes build on the work of the OneVoice North East England construction strategy and action plan, launched in 2020, with the aim of creating a successful, sustainable and inclusive construction industry, equipped with the people and technology to deliver a carbon neutral, built environment, by 2050, if not before.
Nik Turner, said: “The People Group is a conduit between employers, colleges, universities, schools, the people who work within our sector and those thinking about a career in it.
“Our sector is an amazing place to work and our people are our most valuable asset. The creation of a jobs board for displaced workers at Tolent and Metnor, is a small action but one of many that we are seeing across the built environment.  It comes as no surprise that individuals and organisations have stepped up to support workers who have been made redundant.”
Catriona Lingwood, chief executive at CENE, said: “Now, more than ever, people are at the front of our mind within the built environment. It is great to see the North East construction sector coming together to support those affected by the bad news we have heard in the region in recent weeks.
“Most recently, we have seen RE: GEN Group launch a new division after saving 30 construction jobs from former Tolent workers. This is just one example of the support coming in from across the sector. The People Group is a key driver in highlighting best practices and the importance of working together. In collaboration with our other theme groups, we look forward to showcasing and supporting the great people within the North East built environment.”

Team raises £3,830 for charity that protects mental health of construction workers

    Picture
As part of its 20 th anniversary, a team of 10 from North-Tyneside based Carney Consultancy, has raised £3,830 for a charity dedicated to improving the well-being of construction workers.
Having initially planned to raise £3,000 for the North East branch of the Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity, staff took part in this year’s Great North Run and surpassed
    their fundraising targe

Angela Carney, managing director at Carney Consultancy said: “We had a team of 10 take part in the run including some of our partners and clients. This is the
20th anniversary of Carney Consultancy and, like many businesses, we have overcome many hurdles. “At a time when we face an energy crisis and the cost of living is spiraling, charities
really feel the strain. Giving back is something that is part of our culture at Carney Consultancy and Carney CDM, it isn’t just a gesture for our 20th year, it will continue long into
he future. “The Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity is hugely important in promoting the trades and putting the spotlight onto a sector that often gets overlooked.
That is why it is so important. Providing emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families, is something everyone in the sector should get behind and we must continue to work collectively to remove the stigma, so people can talk about their feelings in a safe and supportive environment.” Sarah Sidey, chair of the Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity in the North East, said: “It is great to see organisations such as Carney Consultancy supporting the Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity. We rely on charitable donations and events such as the GNR to raise much needed funds and to spread the word!  The charity's vision for 2022 was to double the numbers of supporters and double the number they support, Carney Consultancy is a key driving force in our region to raise awareness and help break the stigma around mental health, I am a firm believer that if we all work together change  will happen!”

Construction sector volunteers put Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter on the road to success

    Picture

Warm-hearted firms in the North East construction sector have ‘rolled over’ to help upgrade Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in its 125th anniversary year.  Following a rallying call from Angela Carney, managing director at Carney Consultancy, a number of organisations offered their services free of charge.
They include construction students from Tyne Met College, Applebridge Construction, Carney Consultancy and Rainton Construction, who were made aware of the project by Stuart Miller, director at Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) - North East.

Chris Bray, CEO at the Dog and Cat Shelter in Newcastle, said: “The shelter has never been busier with people helping onsite and preparing us for the future. We were established 125 years ago and with a little help from our friends we hope to be here for many years to come. “The shelter is home not just to cats and dogs but rabbits, horses, pigs and even a donkey! We try to make their stay as comfortable as possible while looking for permanent homes. Thanks to Angela and her contacts, we have had unbelievable support from local companies and it is great to see construction students at Tyne Met College gaining real life work experience as they decorate the shelter’s meeting spaces.  “Rainton Construction and Applebridge Construction very kindly offered to assist with the maintenance and upgrade to a road and car park, which would have cost us over £15,000 if we had gone out to tender. “A huge thanks to all who have donated their time, resource and energy to help us.”

Angela Carney, managing director at Carney Consultancy, said: “I am a huge animal lover and a great admirer of the work done at the shelter. I wanted to assist with the upgrade and refurbishments and I am delighted that we have a mix of time served tradespeople and college students all collaborating on the project, without charge.”

Andy Ray, group operations director at Applebridge Construction, said: “We have worked with the shelter for many years and when Angela approached us to help with the car park, we were very happy to offer our services. “Initially, we did some survey work and identified a number of pot holes and divots and will be levelling the road and making it useable for the public.

“We were very keen to get our apprentices involved in this project. We employ around 50 of them and a project like this gives them very useful, real-life, work experience.” Sam Ogle, Tyne Metropolitan College, said: “Allowing our learners to use and develop their construction skills at a live, local project, is so important in preparing them to be industry-ready. We are keen to have an ongoing relationship with Newcastle Dog and Cat shelter and looking forward to seeing it go from strength to strength in its very valuable work.”

White Knight Maintenance is first to donate to mental health campaign 'Come on Lads Let's Talk'

    Picture
With a £1,000 donation, North Shields-based, White Knight Maintenance, specialist in heating, plumbing, building maintenance and electrical services, is the first firm to support mental health initiative, ‘Come on Lads Let’s Talk.’
The campaign was launched by Carney Consultancy, as a mental health awareness programme to support the wellbeing of men in construction, the sector with the highest number of male suicides, year on year.
The programme offers face-to-face, online, telephone and ‘walk and talk’ counselling or therapy with trained professionals, with the first six sessions paid for by North Shields-based, Carney Consultancy.
The initiative is led by a team of specialists including life coach and mentor, Suzanne Barbour Coaching, who covers Teesside, Ann Hunter, Tyne Counselling, who covers the Durham area and Kate Chartres Therapy and Consultation, who works in North Tyneside and Newcastle.
Carney Consultancy was established by managing director, Angela Carney, as a specialist health, safety, environmental and quality consultancy and training provider for the construction and engineering sectors.
Lee Bishop, managing director at White Knight Maintenance Ltd, said: “I have known Angela and Carney Consultancy for five years, as the firm delivers health and safety training for my team.

“Angela informed me about the launch of ‘Come on Lads Let’s Talk’ and it was something that I was eager to support. In recent times, I have seen the impact Covid has had on the wellbeing of members of my team with lockdown uncertainty. The current household price rises and the fuel and gas crisis, has only added to the anxiety.
“I try to speak to my team on a one-to-one basis as much as I can but having a referred programme of therapy by external coaches is something I encourage my team to lean into and take advantage of. If you are in need of help, whether it’s a friendly chat or more in-depth therapy, reach out and tap into the support on offer. In fact, three of my team have benefitted from the coaching programme.”

Angela Carney, managing director at Carney Consultancy, said: “We are not surprised that White Knight Maintenance Ltd is the first company to step forward with support for ‘Come on Lads Let’s Talk’ as the company puts the wellbeing of its people at the forefront of activity.
“The suicide rate in the UK construction sector is four times higher than in any other sector, with the North East particularly badly hit. This is simply unacceptable, more needs to be done and that is why we launched the campaign.
“We want to keep building on the momentum and our message is that we openly welcome pledges both large and small, it is what we achieve as a collective, rather than the size of the donations, that counts.”

Mental Heath Initiative launched and a call to action for the construction sector

    Picture
North Shields-based, Carney Consultancy, has announced the launch of a mental health awareness programme to help support the wellbeing of men in construction, the sector with the highest number of male suicides, year on year.
The company is calling on organisations to come forward and help support the campaign and keep it going.
‘Come On Lads Let’s Talk’ offers face-to-face, online, telephone and ‘walk and talk’ counselling or therapy with trained professionals, with the first six sessions paid for by Carney Consultancy.
Poor mental health is the biggest cause of death in the construction industry. According to the Office for National Statistics, more than 1,400 construction workers took their own life in the UK between 2011 and 2017, more than three times the national average for men.
Carney Consultancy was established by managing director, Angela Carney, as a specialist health, safety, environmental and quality consultancy and training provider for the construction and engineering sectors.
In this latest move, the firm has handpicked three specialists to implement ‘Come On Lads Let’s Talk’ across the North East. They are life coach and mentor, Suzanne Barbour Coaching, who will cover Teesside. Ann Hunter, Tyne Counselling, in the Durham area and Kate Chartres Therapy and Consultation, will work with individuals within North Tyneside and Newcastle.
Following a period of personal self-growth, which saw Angela herself benefit from therapy in 2018, she looked at ways to help other people struggling within the construction sector.
Angela said: “In the UK construction industry the suicide rate is four times higher than in any other sector and the North East is one of the highest areas. We want to change this.
“I have been fortunate to benefit from therapy and I am a huge advocate of getting support from an external therapist or coach. We wanted to utilise specialists based across the North East, each with a slightly different offering, to meet the various needs of individuals suffering from mental health issues.
“Suzanne Barbour, Kate Chartres and Ann Hunter are people I know and admire well and, so far, eight people have benefitted from their services, which Carney Consultancy has funded.
“My aim is to encourage men who may be struggling within the construction sector to reach out and tap into this support. I am also calling on organisations within the sector to help us with funding and to raise awareness amongst employees within their teams or memberships.”
Kate Chartres, said: “To be able to offer people access to bespoke mental health support of this kind is a step-change for the construction sector and is deserving of much wider industry adoption, which I am sure will come.
“I feel privileged to assist people who are experiencing difficulties, many have struggled to access services elsewhere and, as a result, have felt judged. I am able to restore their faith in talking to someone and accessing help.
“On average, men are three times more likely to take their own life than women. There are high risk groups and construction workers are one of them. The North East sadly has the highest rate of suicide in England. The office of National statistics rated an 11% rise from 2019-2020. Sadly, this increased again at the end of 2021 to 14.8 per 100,000.  So, there is still much to be done to help support high-risk individuals.”

The Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is currently in the process of talking to leadership figures from across the nation in an attempt to understand this universal trait and what it means in Britain and Northern Ireland today.

Angela was invited onto an episode of the podcast, which also included an interview with Sir Andrew Strauss. Host Scott Challinor asked both guests a series of questions about leadership and the role it has played in their careers to date.

Scott Challinor commented, ‘Hosting a show like this, where you speak to genuine leaders who have been there and done it, either on a national stage or within a crucial industry sector, is an absolute honour.’

Lord Blunkett, chairman of The Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland said, ‘I think the most informative element of each episode is the first part, where Scott Challinor is able to sit down with someone who really gets how their industry works and knows how to make their organisation tick. Someone who’s there day in day out working hard and inspiring others. That’s what leadership is all about.’
